Arbossar 2022 – an elegantly structured Carignan from old vines, reflecting the freshness and minerality of Priorat’s north-facing slopes.

The wine's story:

Arbossar is one of Terroir al Límit’s first and most highly regarded single-vineyard wines, coming from a steep north-facing slope near Torroja. It is planted entirely with Carignan, with vines nearly 90 years old.

The north-facing microclimate gives the wine a rare freshness and aromatic complexity that sets it apart from the usual powerful Priorat Carignan. 2022 was a warm vintage, but thanks to their cooler exposure the Arbossar grapes retained a beautiful balance and expressive fruit.

In Huber’s Burgundy-inspired hierarchy for Priorat, Arbossar is one of the “Premier Cru” wines, showing a subtle expression of terroir and being more aromatic and graceful than, for example, his other single vineyard, Dits del Terra.

Winemaking:

  • 100% Carignan (Carinyena), from the Arbossar vineyard
  • North-facing slate coster slope, vines over 90 years old
  • Biodynamic viticulture, low yields (<1 tonne/acre)
  • Whole-bunch fermentation with wild yeasts in neutral vessels
  • 18–24 months' ageing in large Stockinger foudres (500L or 1200L)
  • Alcohol ~13.5%
  • ~1,500 bottles produced
  •

Tasting notes:

Colour: Deep ruby-purple.

Aroma: Blackberries, blackcurrant and blueberry, joined by floral notes (lavender, violet) that are Arbossar’s signature. Mediterranean scrub (juniper, sage) and lightly smoky minerality add depth. 2022 adds a touch of plum jam and liquorice, yet stays fine and pure.

Palate: medium-bodied, with lively acidity and tension. Ripe black plum and cloudberries meet citrus peel and saline minerality. Silky, fine tannins give an impeccably focused structure, while wet slate and gentle spice (anise, black pepper) create an elegant finish. A long, polished and exceptionally precise wine.

Food pairing:

  • Grilled lamb cutlets with Mediterranean herbs – the wine's lavender and sage notes mirror the flavours
  • Duck confit or duck breast with berry sauce – the wine and the dish share a berry character
  • Slow-cooked root vegetables and mushrooms – thyme-roasted beetroot or a rich mushroom soup
  • Red meat (e.g. beef cheek in red wine sauce) – the acidity and tannins balance richer dishes
  • Hard aged cheeses – aged Gouda, tomme or blue cheese

Ageing potential:

  • Excellent ageing potential of 15+ years
  • 2022 is a very balanced vintage that will develop beautifully until ~2037
  • Can be somewhat closed in its youth – decanting recommended if opened before 2026
  • Older vintages recall the finer wines of the Rhône or Burgundy in their aromatics

Terroir al Límit is a Priorat winery that has changed the region's wine philosophy over the past two decades. Founded in 2001 by Dominik Huber and Eben Sadie, it grew from a wish to make elegant, transparent wines that reflect their terroir, in contrast to the traditionally powerful, oak-heavy wines of Priorat. When Eben Sadie returned to South Africa, Huber took over and expanded the winery with biodynamic vineyards. His winemaking is known for minimal intervention, using whole-cluster fermentation, natural yeasts and neutral vessels such as concrete tanks and large Stockinger foudres. Huber's range follows the Burgundian hierarchy: village and regional wines such as Terra de Cuques and Torroja, "Premier Cru" single-vineyard wines such as Dits del Terra and Arbossar, and "Grand Cru" wines such as Les Manyes and Les Tosses. He also created the Terroir Històric series, focused on Priorat's historical wine styles. Terroir al Límit has helped shape the new face of Priorat, highlighting elegance and a clear expression of terroir. Huber's work has inspired the "New Priorat" movement, which favours a lighter, more nuanced style.
