Priorat
Priorat is a mountainous wine region in Catalonia, in the province of Tarragona, and one of only two Spanish regions with the top DOQ classification. Steep terraces, llicorella (crumbling slate) and old Garnacha and Cariñena vines give concentrated wines with fresh minerality.
Winemaking here goes back to the 12th-century Scala Dei monastery; modern Priorat was shaped by a group of producers in the late 1980s, among them René Barbier and Clos Mogador.
