Montsant
Montsant surrounds Priorat like a ring and has been a separate appellation (DO) since 2001. Its soils are more varied than its neighbour’s – limestone, clay, granite and in places llicorella slate – and the main grapes are Garnacha and Cariñena.
Montsant wines are often more open and approachable than Priorat, but the best wines from old high-altitude vines have the same depth.
