The wine's story:

Les Manyes is Terroir al Límit's exclusive single-vineyard wine, representing Priorat's most elegant and airy style. It comes from a north-facing vineyard at 800m altitude near Scala Dei, where chalky clay soil (rare in Priorat) gives the wine a unique texture and minerality.

It is 100% Garnatxa Peluda, a rarer variant of Grenache whose smaller berries and larger leaf surface help preserve acidity and balance. Les Manyes has often been compared to red Burgundy or even Barolo, as it is finely structured, silky and exceptionally aromatic.

The 2022 vintage is one of the most harmonious – ripe yet fresh, with radiant fruit. The warm growing season gave the wine depth and power, while the late harvest at high altitude preserved lively acidity and elegance. Production is extremely limited (~1,200 bottles), making it one of Priorat's most exclusive wines.

Winemaking:

    • Location: The Montsant hills, around Mas Deu
    • Vine age: Approximately 60 years
    • Altitude: 800 metres above sea level
    • Style: West-facing
    • Grape variety: 100% Garnacha Peluda (hairy Grenache)
    • Soil type: Clay
    • Yield: 2.000 kg per hectare
    • Production: 3,500 bottles
    • Alcohol content: 13.5%
    • Harvest: Hand-picked
    • Fermentation: Whole-cluster fermentation
    • Ageing: 8 months in concrete vats

Tasting notes:

  • Colour: Paler than most Priorat reds – bright ruby red, garnet at the rim
  • Nose: Extremely aromatic and refined. Fresh red berries (wild strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate), floral notes (rose petals, lavender) and a subtle herbal quality (thyme, fennel). Limestone and chalky minerality lend particular elegance and structure.
  • Palate: Medium-bodied, yet velvety-silky and elegant. Beautifully integrated, juicy red fruit (cherry, raspberry) mingles with citrus freshness and a fine tannic structure. The acidity keeps the wine bright and balanced. The finish is long and mineral, with elegant herbal and floral nuances.

Food pairing:

Les Manyes calls for lighter yet flavourful dishes that do not overshadow the wine’s fine structure:

  • Game birds: roast quail, duck with cherry sauce
  • Meat option: thyme-roasted rack of lamb, or hare with white wine and herbs
  • Vegetable dishes: Ratatouille, grilled red pepper, tomato consommé
  • Cheeses: Soft, ripened cheeses (Époisses, Reblochon, Brie de Meaux)
  • Fish and seafood: a well-structured Grenache can also pair with grilled tuna or salmon in a wine sauce

Ageing potential:

  • Drinking window: 2025–2042
  • Can age for 20+ years, becoming more complex and developing notes of truffle, tobacco and dried flowers
  • Ideal to drink at 7–10 years of age, but if opened young, decanting for at least 2h is recommended

Terroir al Límit is a Priorat winery that has changed the region's wine philosophy over the past two decades. Founded in 2001 by Dominik Huber and Eben Sadie, it grew from a wish to make elegant, transparent wines that reflect their terroir, in contrast to the traditionally powerful, oak-heavy wines of Priorat. When Eben Sadie returned to South Africa, Huber took over and expanded the winery with biodynamic vineyards. His winemaking is known for minimal intervention, using whole-cluster fermentation, natural yeasts and neutral vessels such as concrete tanks and large Stockinger foudres. Huber's range follows the Burgundian hierarchy: village and regional wines such as Terra de Cuques and Torroja, "Premier Cru" single-vineyard wines such as Dits del Terra and Arbossar, and "Grand Cru" wines such as Les Manyes and Les Tosses. He also created the Terroir Històric series, focused on Priorat's historical wine styles. Terroir al Límit has helped shape the new face of Priorat, highlighting elegance and a clear expression of terroir. Huber's work has inspired the "New Priorat" movement, which favours a lighter, more nuanced style.
