The wine's story:
Terra de Cuques, which means “land of fireflies” in Catalan, refers to a Torroja vineyard where fireflies dance at night – a symbol of a vibrant, balanced ecosystem. This is Terroir al Límit’s village-level white wine, from younger vines in Torroja and neighbouring villages. The 2023 vintage continues the fresh, non-oxidative style of previous years, which sets it apart from Priorat’s traditionally heavier whites. Brief skin contact (3–5 days) and ageing in concrete give the wine a creamy texture and zesty minerality, reflecting Dominik Huber’s philosophy of creating elegant, gastronomic white Priorats. 2023 had a cooler summer, so this vintage shows particularly expressive acidity and aromatics.
Winemaking:
- ~70% Garnacha Blanca, 30% Pedro Ximénez (a historic Priorat grape)
- 25–30-year-old vines grown on slate terraces
- Organic viticulture, hand-harvested
- Whole-bunch fermentation with 3–5 days of skin contact (in concrete and stainless steel)
- 6 months’ ageing in concrete tanks, no oak
- Alcohol ~13%
- ~9,000 bottles produced
Tasting notes:
Colour: Yellow with a golden hue, slightly hazy (unfined).
Nose: Yellow apple, ripe lemon, wild dried flowers, beeswax and camomile tea, joined by balsamic notes, fennel and wet-stone minerality. Pedro Ximénez lends a delicate honey-and-date nuance, but the overall impression remains fresh and herbal.
Palate: Medium-bodied, soft and round at first, but quickly turning saline and mineral. Notes of pollen, beeswax, pear skin and a light nuttiness, without any oxidation. The acidity keeps the wine fresh, and the finish is long and herbal, reflecting the cooler character of 2023. A charming balance between skin contact and freshness.
Food pairing:
- Roasted cauliflower with tahini sauce, grilled octopus with herbs
- Asian dishes – dim sum, prawn dumplings
- Quiche with spring onions, artichoke risotto or young pea shoots with garlic
- Turkey or chicken with sage and toasted pine nuts
- Soft cheeses (Brie, young Mahón), cured meats
Ageing potential:
- Enjoyable now, but can develop until 2028
- After a few years, nutty and honeyed characters may develop
- Best young, to enjoy its aromas and texture in full
