The wine's story:
Côte de Marloup is one of Domaine Bernard Fleuriet & Fils’ most highly regarded and distinctive Sancerre whites. The estate was founded by Bernard Fleuriet in 1991 and is now run by his sons Benoît and Mathieu. They are among the region’s most outstanding biodynamic producers – their viticulture is certified both organic (AB) as well as Demeter biodynamics method.
Côte de Marloup is a single parcel just outside Chavignol, home to the estate’s first vineyards – the vines were planted in 1991. This is with a south-facing slope, whose soil consists of shallow, lime-rich clay (Terres Blanches) and just 10 cm below the surface the chalk is already exposed – ideal for Sauvignon Blanc to develop ripeness, tension and minerality.
Winemaking:
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, by a harvest team of around 70 people. All the bunches are sorted on site and transported gently, uncrushed, to the cellar. There, a gravity-fed system, where the pneumatic presses sit above the tanks – the juice moves without pumping and it is protected from oxidation using inert gases. No sulphites are added before bottling.
Fermentation and ageing take place in egg-shaped concrete vessels, which, thanks to their thick structure, allow the wine to develop naturally. Ageing takes place for 12 months on the lees, which gives the wine depth and a creamy texture while preserving freshness and minerality. The wine is made without any oak influence – the entire focus is on pure terroir and the character of the grape.
Tasting notes:
In the glass, the wine is pale yellow with a greenish glint. The nose reveals white flowers (heather, acacia), pear, yellow apple and a hint of citrus. In the background there are wet stone, chalk and a light saline minerality – a clear reference to the chalk-rich soil.
On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, textured and precise. The attack brings out juicy pear, peach and lemon zest, supported by fresh acidity and structured minerality. Thanks to ageing in a concrete egg, the mouthfeel is round and creamy, yet retains its edge. Lingering on the finish are grapefruit, white peach and a stony salinity, which make the wine one of the most brilliant expressions of Sancerre.
Food pairing:
Côte de Marloup is ideal seafood, white fish and with fresh goat’s cheese (e.g. Crottin de Chavignol). Try it with oysters, tartare, ceviche or sushi – the wine's minerality and acidity highlight the purity of seafood. Also excellent with chicken or turkey in a white sauce, grilled trout, goat’s cheese salad, or with vegetable dishes in a fresh herb sauce. Thanks to its elegance, this wine also works vegetarian dishes and refined starters . Serve at 10–12 °C.
Ageing potential:
Although the wine is enjoyable right away, it has very good development potential over 5–8 years. In the first couple of years (2024–2026) fresh floral and fruity notes dominate, later developing chalky depth, honeyed roundness and a truffle-like nuance. From 2028–2030 the wine will be at the peak of its maturity. Also well suited to cellaring.
