The wine's story:

MG BB Spirit is the historic cuvée of Champagne Michel Genet – a classic Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne that reflects the house style in its purest form. The grapes come solely from the Grand Cru village of Chouilly, from the chalky slopes of the Côte des Blancs, renowned for their elegant and mineral Chardonnay.

The Michel Genet house is a family business whose leaders – Vincent, Agnès and Antoine Genet – proudly consider themselves “Manufacteurs de Grands Crus”. They are personally involved in every stage of production, from organic grape growing to long years of ageing in the cellar. Viticulture is sustainable, using organic fertilisers and chemical-free crop protection. The result is Champagnes made from Chardonnay that express their origin with crystal clarity.

Winemaking:

MG BB Spirit is made 100% Chardonnay grapes. All the plots are vinified separately to preserve their individuality. After harvest, malolactic fermentation on the lees, which adds a creamy texture and depth to the wine.

The base wine is a blend of several vintages, always including a significant proportion of reserve wines. This ensures consistency of style and adds complexity to the wine. Careful blending takes place before bottling, followed by long ageing on the lees in accordance with the traditional method. The Champagne receives a Brut-level dosage of 8 g/l, which strikes the ideal balance between fruitiness and freshness.

Tasting notes:

Golden yellow in colour, slightly amber, pointing to maturity and the presence of reserve wines. On the nose, prominent notes of freshly baked bread, croissant, almond paste and toasted nuts – a clear sign of long ageing on the lees. With air, it opens up to reveal citrus fruit (lemon, mandarin, grapefruit) and a fine, spicy minerality.

On the palate the wine is lively and precise, yet rich – fresh citrus and yellow fruit at first, then brioche, roasted almonds and a light saline minerality. On the mid-palate come cocoa and linseed oil nuances that add to the wine's polished, opulent character. The finish is long, layered and full, balancing ripeness and freshness.

Food pairing:

MG BB Spirit pairs superbly as an aperitif, yet thanks to its structure and richness it is a true food wine. An ideal companion shellfish, baked seafood and scallops pan-fried in butter. The Champagne’s toasty and citrus nuances also complement white meats, such as herb-roasted chicken or veal. It also suits mushroom dishes, such as wild mushroom risotto or truffled brie. Lightly spiced Asian dishes (e.g. fish with lemongrass and ginger) gain extra lift from the wine’s citrus freshness. Among cheeses, we recommend bloomy-rind cheeses (Brie, Camembert) or older hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère.

Ageing potential:

Thanks to the elegance of Chardonnay, its Grand Cru origin and balanced dosage, this Champagne is ready to drink now, but will continue to develop well for within 5–6 years of disgorgement. Over time the mousse becomes even softer and the palate gains toasted nuts, honey and dried fruit, while the mineral backbone and freshness remain. We recommend drinking it 2024–2029, though a well-kept bottle may continue to develop until 2030.

Champagne Michel Genet is a family estate in the heart of Champagne – in the prestigious Grand Cru village of Chouilly, right next to Épernay. Here, on the chalky slopes of the Côte des Blancs, some of the region's purest and most elegant Blanc de Blancs Champagnes are made. The domaine was founded by Michel Genet in the last century and is now run by his children – Vincent, Agnès and Antoine Genet. They proudly call themselves "Manufacteurs de Grands Crus": true craftspeople who are personally involved in every bottle from start to finish, from growing the grapes to ageing the wine in the cellar. Their vines cover about 9 hectares, 95% of which is Chardonnay – the grape that connects most deeply with the distinctive chalk soils of the Côte des Blancs. Michel Genet Champagnes are marked by clear minerality, purity and structure – wines that speak to sommeliers and curious wine lovers alike. The vineyards are farmed as close to nature as possible – organic fertilisers, no chemical pesticides and respect for the terroir in every vine. All grapes are picked by hand and gently pressed, and each plot is vinified separately to keep its unique character. In the Genet cellar the Champagnes go through malolactic fermentation on the lees, which gives roundness and depth. Ageing is long – the bottles rest on their lees for several years for greater elegance, complexity and a finer mousse. Michel Genet is not a volume producer – the Champagnes are made in small quantities with great attention to detail. The result is Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs that holds its own next to the famous big houses, but with a sincere and personal signature – a precise expression of the chalky slopes of Chouilly, the clear elegance of Chardonnay and the growers' craft.
