The wine's story:

Clos Erasmus 2022 is the latest release among Priorat’s top wines, continuing the high ratings achieved year after year. Made from Daphne Glorian’s oldest vines, including Garnacha plants over 80 years old, this wine reflects the full potential of the llicorella soil.

2022 was a very dry vintage, but careful harvesting produced a powerful yet balanced wine that does not shy away from its 15% alcohol while retaining elegance and fine balance. Only 340 cases (~3,400 bottles) were made, making it exceptionally exclusive.

Winemaking:

  • ~70% Garnacha, 30% Syrah, organically and biodynamically grown.
  • The Garnacha comes from 40–85-year-old vines on terraced plots, the Syrah from slightly younger vines.
  • 24h chilling, natural-yeast fermentation in steel tanks.
  • Gentle extraction (shorter pump-overs) to avoid over-extraction.
  • Aged for 18 months in French oak (40% new) and partly in 700L amphorae to balance the oak influence.
  • Alcohol: 15%, pH 3.3 (astonishingly low, giving the wine its vibrancy).
  • Bottled in May 2024, unfiltered.

Tasting notes:

Deep purple-red colour. On the nose, wild berries, crème de cassis and ripe plum, framed by Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, bay), crushed slate and cocoa notes. Graphite, violets and a light smokiness add complexity. On the palate full-bodied yet silky, combining black cherries, blackberry liqueur, liquorice and minerality. The precise balance of acidity and tannin creates an almost weightless impression, despite the wine’s depth. Fresh acidity (low pH) gives the wine vitality and great longevity. A long, nuanced finish blending black fruit, fine smokiness and saline minerality. In its youth the wine is slightly closed, but already harmonious and balanced.

Food pairing:

Pairs with the finest meat dishes: roast lamb with rosemary, Wagyu beef or game braised in wine sauce, slow-cooked wild boar with juniper berries. The fine tannins also allow it to be matched with grilled tuna or duck breast in a berry sauce. Luxurious vegetarian options: truffle risotto, aged Comté or Manchego cheese. Best served at 16–17°C and decanted for at least an hour.

Ageing potential:

A monumental wine that will evolve for 20–30 years. Best 2026–2045, developing nuances of leather, graphite and dried flowers. In 10 years it may attain the same complexity as a mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Hermitage.

In 1988, when Priorat was still a forgotten Spanish wine region, Daphne Glorian took a risk that changed wine history. Born in Paris to Swiss parents, young and passionate about wine, she invested her life savings in a terraced vineyard in Gratallops. Her friends René Barbier, Álvaro Palacios and others had inspired her – and so one of the "big five" houses of Priorat was born. Daphne's project was named after the humanist Erasmus, whose work her scholar father admired. Clos Erasmus, made according to principles of minimal intervention and low yields, quickly became a cult wine, receiving several 100-point scores and securing its place among Spain's top wines. Today viticulture at Clos i Terrasses is led by biodynamics expert Ester Nin, who helps express the uniqueness of Priorat's slate terroir. Alongside Clos Erasmus a second wine was created – Laurel – which allows only the very best barrels to go into the grand vin, ensuring the uncompromising quality of Clos Erasmus. Despite international demand, Clos i Terrasses has remained a small, intimate winery – not just a wine, but a symbol of Daphne Glorian's dedication and the rebirth of Priorat.
