The wine's story:

2018 was a classic and excellent Priorat vintage – not excessively hot, allowing slow ripening and the retention of high acidity. Born of a collaboration between eight winemakers, Vinya del Vuit 2018 combines power and elegance, offering a perfectly balanced expression of Priorat’s terroir.

The wine comes from Cariñena and Garnatxa vines over 100 years old, with extremely low yields. Only 2,500 bottles were produced. Fermentation with native yeasts, a long 4-week maceration and 18 months' ageing in 3–4-year-old French and Austrian oak barrels ensure a pure and elegant style.

Winemaking:

  • Vines planted c. 1910, growing on steep llicorella slopes
  • Hand-picked in September 2018
  • Fermentation in small open vats, with a long 4-week maceration
  • 18 months in French and Austrian oak (3rd–4th use), followed by 18 months in bottle
  • Alcohol ~14.5%
  • Only ~2,500 bottles produced

Tasting notes:

Deep ruby red with a dark core, hinting at the wine’s concentration.

On the nose, dark berries (blackberries, cherries), liquorice, graphite and Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, lavender). A slightly ferrous nuance, dried violet floral notes and stony minerality.

The palate is full and powerful, yet balanced by lively acidity. Black plums, blackcurrant, clove and nutmeg unfold silkily on the palate, followed by dark chocolate, balsamic and saline minerality. Softening yet firm tannins lead to a long, elegant finish where sweet black berries and a slightly bitter almond note linger.

Decant for 1–2 hours to let the wine open up fully.

Food pairing:

  • Game and slow-braised dishes: braised rabbit (Civet de Conill), wild boar ragù
  • Lamb: leg of lamb with rosemary or a spicy Moroccan tagine with prunes
  • Beef: grilled filet mignon with green peppercorn sauce
  • Aged cheeses: aged Gouda, blue cheese

Ageing potential:

  • Drink from 2022, best 2025–2035
  • With age, notes of truffle, cigar box and dried fig emerge
  • If you have several bottles, open one now and another after 2028 to follow its evolution

La Vinya del Vuit (Catalan for "the Vineyard of the Eight") is a rare and exclusive Priorat wine born from friendship and a shared passion for wine. The project was started by René Barbier and his cousin, who decided to make a wine together with friends. And so the joint venture of eight wine lovers was born: René Barbier Jr., Julian Basté, Iban Foix, Montse Mateos, Ester Nin, Núria Pérez, Sara Pérez and Philippe Thévenon. The vineyard was restored entirely by hand, working at weekends with vines more than 100 years old. The wine is made organically with minimal intervention to express the terroir in its purest form. Yields are extremely low – 100 g of grapes per vine, meaning 8–10 vines are needed for one bottle. The wine ages 16–18 months in 300-litre oak barrels, then in concrete and demijohns, and spends another 5 years in bottle, reaching exceptional concentration and longevity. Each vintage has a unique label, given a new and bold design by designer Joanji Bertran. The wine is extremely exclusive – each member receives only 12 bottles a year, and the rest is sold worldwide en primeur. In 2024 a new white wine was added to the project, for which Carinyena Blanca and Garnatxa Blanca vines were planted. La Vinya del Vuit is more than a wine – it is a symbol of shared passion and respect for the terroir of Priorat.
