The wine's story:

Terra de Cuques Negre is Terroir al Límit's village-level red from Torroja, offering an introduction to Dominik Huber's winemaking philosophy. Unlike many entry-level Priorat wines, it is neither oaky nor heavy, but reflects the Torroja terroir in a juicy, more approachable form.

2022 was a warm vintage, but early picking and precise viticulture kept the alcohol moderate (~14.5%) and the fruit fresh. The wine was fermented with whole bunches and a short maceration to preserve purity and balance. This is Priorat’s take on a Burgundian village wine – enjoyable young, yet complex enough to be taken seriously.

Winemaking:

  • 50% Garnacha, 50% Cariñena
  • 25–40-year-old vines at ~400m altitude
  • Organic viticulture
  • Fermented with native yeasts, whole bunches (semi-carbonic)
  • Short maceration: some of the grapes for 7 days, some for 10 days
  • 8 months in concrete tanks and large used foudres (no new oak)
  • Alcohol ~14–14.5%
  • ~10,000 bottles produced

Tasting notes:

Colour: medium-deep ruby red.

Aroma: Ripe red and black berries – wild raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant. Spices and herbs – black pepper, clove, fresh thyme. A delicate floral line (peony, liquorice) and chalky minerality point to the soil of Torroja.

Palate: Medium-bodied, warm and juicy. First black cherry, dark forest berries and plum jam, then lively acidity and a herbal undertone (rosemary, bay leaf). Cariñena brings a fine tannic structure and a chalky finish, keeping the wine fresh and balanced. Silky texture and a long mineral finish.

Food pairing:

  • Tapas: grilled sausage, albóndigas (Spanish meatballs), patatas bravas
  • Mediterranean cuisine: aubergine parmigiana, pizza with fennel sausage, chicken roasted with garlic and herbs
  • A Catalan classic: butifarra sausage with white beans
  • Grilled and smoked dishes: pulled-meat burger, grilled vegetables with romesco sauce
  • Hard cheeses: 12-month Manchego, Cantal
  •

Ageing potential:

  • Ideal for drinking 2023–2028, though it may last longer
  • Lively and juicy when young, but developing a herbal, more complex profile
  • No need for long ageing – enjoyable right away after a short decant

Terroir al Límit is a Priorat winery that has changed the region's wine philosophy over the past two decades. Founded in 2001 by Dominik Huber and Eben Sadie, it grew from a wish to make elegant, transparent wines that reflect their terroir, in contrast to the traditionally powerful, oak-heavy wines of Priorat. When Eben Sadie returned to South Africa, Huber took over and expanded the winery with biodynamic vineyards. His winemaking is known for minimal intervention, using whole-cluster fermentation, natural yeasts and neutral vessels such as concrete tanks and large Stockinger foudres. Huber's range follows the Burgundian hierarchy: village and regional wines such as Terra de Cuques and Torroja, "Premier Cru" single-vineyard wines such as Dits del Terra and Arbossar, and "Grand Cru" wines such as Les Manyes and Les Tosses. He also created the Terroir Històric series, focused on Priorat's historical wine styles. Terroir al Límit has helped shape the new face of Priorat, highlighting elegance and a clear expression of terroir. Huber's work has inspired the "New Priorat" movement, which favours a lighter, more nuanced style.
