The wine's story:

Roter Berg – the red hill – takes its name from its reddish, iron-rich soil overlying limestone. The lime gives Hammelmann’s Spätburgunder a clarity, tension and salinity that are rare in German Pinot Noir. The house’s single-vineyard Pinot matures for around two years in wooden casks and is fine and precise rather than powerful in style.

Lukas Hammelmann founded his small wine estate in Zeiskam, in the southern Pfalz, in 2016, coming from a family with no previous connection to winemaking. He farms just under five hectares in three villages – Zeiskam, Hochstadt and Neustadt-Hambach – and makes wine from only three varieties: Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder.

Winemaking:

  • Variety: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) 100% – single-vineyard wine
  • Soil: reddish, iron-rich clay over limestone, weathered sandstone deposits
  • Vine age: over 20 years
  • Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation
  • Around 24 months in wooden barrels, bottled unfiltered
  • Alcohol 13%

Tasting notes:

Cherry, cranberry, wild strawberry, plum, herbs and a light earthiness. Silky tannins, fresh acidity and a saline finish.

Food pairing:

Duck, game birds, mushroom risotto, veal, salmon and aged cheeses.

Ageing potential:

Best 2026–2034.

Lukas Hammelmann didn't inherit a wine estate – he built one himself. His family has no connection to winegrowing, but the dream of becoming a winemaker stayed with him from childhood, and in 2016 he started with a single Riesling plot in his home village of Zeiskam in southern Pfalz. Today he farms just under five hectares in three places – Zeiskam, the neighbouring village of Hochstadt and the historic slopes of Neustadt-Hambach – and works with only three grapes: Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). All grapes are picked by hand, ferment spontaneously in wooden barrels and are mostly bottled unfiltered. The vineyards are farmed organically but without certification – "I don't do it for marketing." Around 30,000 bottles are made each year, 80% of which is exported to ten countries. In 2023 VINUM Weinguide Deutschland named him its discovery of the year.
