Pfalz

Pfalz (Palatinate) is Germany’s second-largest wine region, on the eastern slopes of the Haardt mountains near the French border. Sheltered by the mountains, it is warmer and drier than most German regions.

Soils range from red sandstone (Buntsandstein) to limestone and clay; the main grapes are Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), as well as Chardonnay and Weissburgunder. Dry (trocken) wines are the region’s strength.
