The wine's story:
Hambacher Schlossberg lies at the foot of the Haardt mountains, below the historic Hambach Castle – a place regarded as the birthplace of German democracy. The warm, south-facing slope of red and yellow sandstone yields Lukas's most powerful and fullest Riesling, which nevertheless retains the straight acidity that is the house's trademark.
Lukas Hammelmann founded his small wine estate in Zeiskam, in the southern Pfalz, in 2016, coming from a family with no previous connection to winemaking. He farms just under five hectares in three villages – Zeiskam, Hochstadt and Neustadt-Hambach – and makes wine from only three varieties: Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder.
Winemaking:
- Variety: Riesling 100% – single-vineyard wine
- Soil: red and yellow sandstone (Buntsandstein)
- Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation in wooden casks
- 24 months on the lees, natural malolactic fermentation, bottled unfiltered
- Alcohol 12.5%
Tasting notes:
Ripe yellow fruit, citrus peel, spices and smoky minerality. Dry, powerful and focused, with a very long finish. Decanting recommended.
Food pairing:
Refined fish dishes, lobster, duck breast, veal and mature cheeses.
Ageing potential:
Best 2027–2036. Worth cellaring.
