The wine's story:

La Blanquita comes from the Balbaína Alta area, and De La Riva brought it to the fore as a very precise, calm, yet profoundly deep amontillado. This is not a powerful or aggressive style, but rather a restrained, saline wine intended for the table. It is precisely this elegance that sets it apart from many classic amontillados, which can feel heavier or more dominant. La Blanquita shows that the greatness of an amontillado need not come only from age and concentration, but can also come from stillness, clarity and very precise balance.

Winemaking:

It comes from the Balbaína Alta pago and has been bottled as a small-lot amontillado. The wine’s average age is around 15 years, and its development has been calm and static rather than aggressively built up. A life that began under flor has moved on towards oxidative ageing, yet the wine has not become heavy. The approach emphasises elegance, salinity and food-friendliness rather than mere concentration.

Tasting notes:

On the nose, hazelnut, dried citrus, tobacco, old wood, camomile and sea salt. Dry, silky and very long on the palate, with a fine nutty, slightly ethereal and saline finish. The wine has the depth typical of amontillado, but leans towards an airy rather than heavy feel.

Food pairing:

Pairs with consommé, roast fowl, veal, mushrooms, aged hard cheeses and Ibérico dishes. Also very good with sauces, broths and dishes with a nutty nuance.

Ageing potential:

Best within 10–20 years. A very stable and slowly evolving wine.

Bodegas De La Riva is a joint project of Willy Pérez and Ramiro Ibáñez, aimed at restoring the meaning of Jerez's older wines, historic vineyard sites and small-batch wines. While Luis Pérez and Ramiro each make terroir-driven wines under their own names, De La Riva lets their two approaches meet even more freely: old soleras, single casks, historical references and very carefully chosen pagos. The wines are made in small quantities, often outside the usual mass-produced sherry logic, and emphasise place, ageing and the old flavour ideals of Jerez. De La Riva wines are mostly serious, layered and highly individual.
