The wine's story:

Clos Romans is one of Domaine des Roches Neuves' white wines with the clearest sense of origin. It is 100% Chenin Blanc from the Saumur appellation, grown on clay-limestone soil where around 30 cm of clay-rich sand sits above a layer of Senonian limestone.

This wine represents the most serious side of Saumur Chenin. If Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé speak of Sauvignon Blanc, Clos Romans shows why Chenin Blanc is one of the Loire’s greatest white varieties: it can be dry, intense, long-lived and very strong with food, while retaining its nerve.

Winemaking:

  • Grape: 100% Chenin Blanc
  • Appellation: Saumur
  • Soil: clay-limestone; 30 cm of clay-rich sand over Senonian limestone
  • Vine material: massale selection
  • Harvest: by hand
  • Pressing: pneumatic, about 4 hours
  • Fermentation: in 400 and 600 litre barrels
  • Ageing: 9 months on fine lees
  • Cellar work: at low temperature in an underground cellar to preserve fruitiness
  • Alcohol / natural strength: 12.9° according to the producer’s sheet
  • Serving: 11–12 °C

Tasting notes:

A yellowish, clear and bright hue. The nose shows concentration and freshness at once: white and exotic fruit, citrus, lemon or grapefruit, acacia, hawthorn and a delicate floral nuance. On the palate the wine has a broader texture but is not heavy – limestone and acidity keep it focused.

Food pairing:

  • Monkfish with bacon or a smoky element
  • Grilled scallops with yuzu or citrus
  • Sea bream or sea bass with Mediterranean herbs
  • Chicken with a buttery sauce and mushrooms
  • Mature goat’s cheeses or Comté

Ageing potential:

7–12 years, probably longer in a good cellar. When young, it can be opened 1–2 hours before serving or lightly aerated.

Domaine des Roches Neuves is one of the best-known names in Saumur, its wines built around biodynamic viticulture, low yields and very precise cellar work. Clos Romans is one of the domaine's top white wines: Chenin Blanc from clay-limestone soil, where 30 cm of clay-rich sand sits above a layer of Senonian limestone. The domaine's style is not only about ripeness but also energy. Clos Romans shows why Saumur Chenin can be ripe, intense, mineral and a very serious food wine all at once.
