The wine's story:

Domaine Bernard Fleuriet & Fils is one of the leading biodynamic producers in Sancerre, whose wines express their origins in a pure and precise way. The domaine was founded in 1991 by Bernard Fleuriet and is today run by his sons Benoît and Mathieu. They grow grapes in Sancerre and Menetou-Salon across 25 hectares in total, following certified organic (AB) and biodynamic Demeter standards.

Sancerre Rouge 2022 is made from 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from different plots and soil types – chalky clay (Terres Blanches), stony Caillottes and flint-rich slopes (Silex). 2022 was an exceptional vintage that yielded very ripe, balanced grapes. Production took place entirely without added sulphur during fermentation and ageing, to preserve maximum purity and character.

Winemaking:

Fermentation lasted 30 days, partly as whole bunches, to bring out freshness, floral notes and a fine tannic structure. The wine was then aged 80% in French oak barrels and 20% in concrete vessels, 12 months on the lees in total. Mostly old neutral barrels were used to keep the focus on fruit and terroir. The final wine was bottled with light filtration and minimal added sulphites.

Tasting notes:

The wine is a bright ruby red in colour. On the nose, what stands out is red berries (cherries, wild strawberries, raspberry), violet flowers, a fine spiciness and a flinty smokiness. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, with very good acidity and silky tannins. Berry freshness blends with herbs, white pepper and light oak notes (e.g. roasted coffee, soft vanilla). The finish is long, clean and balanced.

Food pairing:

Sancerre Rouge 2022 pairs superbly with dishes that feature a fine balance between fruit, herbs and acidity. For example:

  • Poultry: Roast duck, smoked turkey, quail

  • Pork: Pan-fried fillet steak, grilled pork chop with herbs

  • Beef: Carpaccio, thinly sliced steak (e.g. flank)

  • Game: Lightly roasted venison or hare

  • Vegetarian: Mushroom risotto, lentils in red wine sauce, roasted root vegetables

  • Cheeses:

    • Hard cheeses – Comté, Tomme de Savoie

    • Soft cheeses – Brie, Pont l'Évêque

    • Bloomy-rind cheeses – aged Camembert

  • Asian cuisine: Teriyaki, hoisin duck, Japanese grilled dishes

  • Slow-braised dishes: The wine also pairs well with braised veal, wild boar stew or vegetable stew

Ageing potential:

Thanks to its structure and fine framework of tannins, this wine has very good ageing potential of 6–8 years. It is fresh and berry-driven now; in 3–5 years wild berries, spice and a woodland complexity will emerge.

Domaine Bernard Fleuriet & Fils is one of the most respected family estates in Sancerre, dedicated to expressing its terroir as honestly and individually as possible. The domaine was founded by Bernard Fleuriet in 1991 and has since been joined by his sons Benoît and Mathieu – together they farm 25 hectares in Sancerre and neighbouring Menetou-Salon. Viticulture is based entirely on nature-friendly principles: no synthetic pesticides, organic fertilisers and practices that meet both organic (AB) and biodynamic Demeter standards. All grapes are picked by hand, often by a team of up to 70 people, to ensure the highest quality from the vineyard onwards. What makes the domaine special is that it farms vines on all three classic Sancerre soil types – Terres Blanches (chalky clay), Caillottes (limestone gravel) and Silex (flint). This lets them make wines that are layered yet always precise expressions of their origin. In the cellar the Fleuriets use gravity and inert gases to protect the juice from oxidation. Depending on the cuvée, the wines ferment and age in concrete eggs or oak barrels – the aim is not to add flavour but to give structure and texture. Everything is geared towards purity and finesse: natural yeasts, low sulphur and long lees ageing give the wines their special character. The wines of Bernard Fleuriet & Fils – both white and red – have won a place with many sommeliers and wine lovers for their precision, minerality and length. Whether a single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc or an elegant Pinot Noir, they always reflect careful work and a strong connection to the soil.
