The wine's story:

A Mi Chemin means in French “halfway there” and symbolically refers to two Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs – Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger – in-between style.

While Le Mesnil is known for its a Chardonnay with a very straight, chalky and sharp structure , while Oger brings to the blend slightly riper fruit and texture. A Mi Chemin combines these two characters – the result is a Champagne that is at once precise, mineral and yet deeper in texture.

For Girard-Bonnet, this cuvée is one of the core wines, because it shows most clearly their understanding of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay: pure, terroir-focused and with very low dosage.

Winemaking:

The grapes come from from Grand Cru vineyards in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger, two of the best-known Chardonnay villages of the Côte des Blancs. The harvest is done by hand to preserve the quality and freshness of the grapes.

Pressing is gentle, and fermentation takes place both in stainless steel tanks as well as in neutral oak barrels. This combination preserves the pure fruit profile of the Chardonnay while adding a little more texture and depth to the wine.

After the primary fermentation, the wine matures for a long time on the lees, which gives the Champagne complexity, a finer mousse and nuances of brioche before it is recorked.

Technical details

Grape: Chardonnay
Origin: Grand Cru – Le Mesnil-sur-Oger & Oger
Composition: 2023 base wine + reserve wines
Vinification: Stainless steel + oak barrels
Dosage: 1.5 g/l (Extra Brut)
Alcohol: 12.5%
Recorked: 8 December 2025

Tasting notes:

On the nose come lemon zest, white peach and green apple, complemented by chalky minerality and a light marine salinity. Maturation on the lees gives the wine notes of brioche and roasted almond.

On the palate, the wine is taut and very precise. Citrus acidity gives the wine a clear structure, while its Oger origin adds a little more fruit and texture to the mid-palate. The finish is long, dry and mineral, where notes of lemon and chalk linger.

Food pairing:

A Mi Chemin pairs especially well with dishes where pure flavour and fine texture.

A good match, for example:

  • scallops or langoustine

  • white fish with beurre blanc sauce

  • oysters and other fresh seafood

  • sashimi or lightly marinated fish

The wine’s taut acidity and low dosage also help to balance slightly richer fish dishes, bringing the flavours of the dish clearly to the fore.

Ageing potential:

A Mi Chemin is enjoyable young thanks to its fresh, taut structure, but develops very well in bottle 8–12 years. Over time the aromas deepen and there emerge ripe apple, toasted nuts and brioche nuances, while the mineral structure remains clearly perceptible.

Champagne Girard-Bonnet is a grower Champagne house in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs. The domaine is run by Paul Girard, from a family that has grown grapes in the area for several generations. The house has small vineyards in several renowned Côte des Blancs villages – Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Avize (Grand Cru) and Vertus (Premier Cru). These villages sit on chalky slopes where thin limestone soil gives Chardonnay the region's typical precise acidity, chalky minerality and straight structure. Girard-Bonnet's Champagnes are based mainly on Chardonnay. In the vineyards the focus is on small parcels, low yields and the balance between ripeness and acidity. Several plots have been in the family for decades and give small but concentrated crops. In the cellar the approach is technically precise and rather restrained. Fermentation uses natural yeasts, in stainless steel or neutral oak depending on the cuvée. Whether malolactic fermentation is used depends on the vintage and the wine – the aim is to keep the tense acidity and clarity of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. The wines age for a long time on the lees, adding texture and depth. The range is built on the expressions of villages and single vineyards – from the fresher, more approachable style of Vertus Premier Cru to the chalky precision of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the elegance of Avize and the slightly broader, riper tones of Oger. The result is Champagnes that emphasise origin, structure and minerality – a clear and detailed expression of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay.
