Le Bourg 2024

25,90 €

Bourg is a Cabernet Franc from old vines in the village of Varrains – a juicy, peppery and mineral red that shows the more elegant side of Saumur-Champigny.

The wine's story:

Le Bourg is one of Fabien Duveau's most important red parcels in the village of Varrains. According to the producer, it is a clos of under a hectare, surrounded by natural hedgerows, tuffeau stone walls and an orchard. This is not merely a romantic detail but part of Duveau's principle: a vineyard must function as a living ecosystem.

The vines were planted in 1966 and the wine comes from clay-limestone soil influenced by greenish chalk. True to Cabernet Franc, the style is aromatic, fresh, peppery and juicy, but Le Bourg has more depth and concentration than a simpler Saumur-Champigny.

Winemaking:

  • Grape: 100% Cabernet Franc
  • Appellation: AOC Saumur-Champigny
  • Village: Varrains
  • Site: Le Bourg
  • Vines: planted in 1966
  • Soil: clay-limestone, transitional layers of greenish chalk
  • Farming: organic; Demeter-certified domaine
  • Harvest: by hand
  • Fermentation: native yeasts
  • Vinification: traditional, with no added sulphites during fermentation
  • Ageing: around 10 months in concrete tank
  • Serving: 16–18 °C

Tasting notes:

Red cherry, raspberry, slightly jammy red berries, black pepper, juniper berry and a clear mineral line. The tannins are fine and taut rather than heavy. This is a Cabernet Franc to serve chilled and with food, not a stand-in for a heavy red.

Food pairing:

  • Duck breast or confit
  • Veal or pork with herbs and mushrooms
  • Grilled vegetables and lentils
  • Lighter meat stews
  • Harder aged cheeses

Ageing potential:

4–8 years.

Fabien Duveau is an eighth-generation winemaker in Saumur-Champigny who took over the domaine from his father in 2008. His work is based on the two main grapes of Saumur: Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Duveau's wines are tied to specific lieux-dits – precise sites around Chacé, Varrains, Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg and Brézé. Fabien has converted the domaine to organic farming, and it has held Demeter biodynamic certification since late 2023. His work centres on living soils, natural yeasts, tuffeau, clay-limestone, sand and flint-chalk, and a wish to let each site speak its own language. In style, Fabien Duveau's wines are energetic, precise and made for food. The white Chenins are not just fresh but carry texture, depth and mineral tension. The Cabernet Francs are fresh, juicy and peppery, leaning towards transparency rather than weight.
