The wine's story:

Dits del Terra translates as “Fingers of the Earth” and comes from an old Carignan vineyard near Torroja. It is a steep, south-facing slope that gets more sun than the shadier vines of Arbossar. As a result, Dits del Terra is a more powerful, fuller and more structured wine, with greater depth and minerality.

Dominik Huber considers this his “Premier Cru”-level wine, showing the most classic dark and mineral side of Carignan. 2022 was a warm vintage, but thanks to an early harvest the wine retained its freshness and balance. This is a deep, intense, yet finely structured Priorat red with great ageing potential.

Winemaking:

  • 100% Carignan (Carinyena) on the south-facing Les Dits slope, on llicorella slate
  • 80–90-year-old vines, organic/ biodynamic viticulture
  • Whole-bunch fermentation with natural yeasts, partly semi-carbonic maceration
  • Maceration time 2-3 weeks
  • 18 months’ ageing in large French oak foudres (500L), with no new oak
  • Alcohol ~14%
  • ~2,000 bottles produced

Tasting notes:

Colour: Deep garnet red with a slightly bluish tinge.

Nose: Dark and mineral, revealing notes of blackberry, blackcurrant and black plum. The llicorella slate brings graphite, saline smokiness and an umami-like soy sauce character. Mediterranean herbs (thyme, bay) and light spices (pepper, anise) also appear.

Palate: Full and firmly structured, with ripe black berries mingling with stony minerality and abundant tannins. There are also nuances of coffee, black tea and black olive. Despite its depth the wine is balanced – the 14% alcohol is well integrated and the acidity keeps it lively. The finish is long and elegant, with slightly bitter herbal notes.

Food pairing:

Suits more robustly flavoured dishes:

  • Beef tenderloin or braised oxtail
  • Game in red wine sauce
  • Duck breast with cherry sauce
  • Roast pork or roast lamb with thyme
  • Truffle pasta or mushroom casserole
  • Aged cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino, Manchego)

Ageing potential:

  • Very long-lived – 15-20 years
  • Optimal drinking window 2025–2040
  • The 2022 is youthful and monolithic at first – it opens up better from ~2027
  • With development, further nuances emerge: dried fruit, tobacco, cedar and earthy tones
  • On a par with Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Barolo in longevity, but with a different profile

Terroir al Límit is a Priorat winery that has changed the region's wine philosophy over the past two decades. Founded in 2001 by Dominik Huber and Eben Sadie, it grew from a wish to make elegant, transparent wines that reflect their terroir, in contrast to the traditionally powerful, oak-heavy wines of Priorat. When Eben Sadie returned to South Africa, Huber took over and expanded the winery with biodynamic vineyards. His winemaking is known for minimal intervention, using whole-cluster fermentation, natural yeasts and neutral vessels such as concrete tanks and large Stockinger foudres. Huber's range follows the Burgundian hierarchy: village and regional wines such as Terra de Cuques and Torroja, "Premier Cru" single-vineyard wines such as Dits del Terra and Arbossar, and "Grand Cru" wines such as Les Manyes and Les Tosses. He also created the Terroir Històric series, focused on Priorat's historical wine styles. Terroir al Límit has helped shape the new face of Priorat, highlighting elegance and a clear expression of terroir. Huber's work has inspired the "New Priorat" movement, which favours a lighter, more nuanced style.
