The wine's story:

Laurel Blanc is the newest project from Clos i Terrasses – a white Priorat born of Daphne Glorian’s wish to bring the region’s minerality and elegance into the world of white wine as well. The grapes come from the slopes of the village of Gratallops, where llicorella (slate) and limestone soils give the wine its characteristic minerality and freshness.

The 2024 blend contains Garnatxa Blanca, Chenin Blanc, Viognier and a small proportion Moscatel – a rare combination in Priorat, giving the wine an aromatic, textured and at the same time very pure style.

Fermentation took place with wild yeasts in 400-litre French oak barrels and clay amphorae, after which the wine matured for a further 6 months or so in neutral oak and amphora. No new oak was used, to keep the wine focused on fresh fruit, minerality and an elegant texture. Production is very small, the style is natural and modern – minimal intervention, unfined and unfiltered.

Winemaking:

  • Grapes: Garnacha Blanca (~75%), Chenin Blanc (~15%), Viognier and Muscat (~10%)
  • Vineyard: Les Manyetes, at 225–240 m altitude in Gratallops
  • Soil: Schist (slate)
  • Farming: Organic (CCPAE certified) and biodynamic practices
  • 24h cold soak and chilling; whole bunches were pressed in a small hand press
  • Spontaneous fermentation in 400L French oak barrels and clay amphorae
  • Ageing: 8 months in the same vessels (used oak barrels + amphorae)
  • Bottled in mid-2024, ~3,400 bottles produced

Tasting notes:

In the glass, the wine is pale yellow with a greenish tint. The nose is delicate yet detailed: white blossom, green apple, lemon zest, a fresh herbal note (fennel, rosemary flowers) and a light mineral thread. As it opens up, there also emerge white peach, hints of almond skin and delicate honey.

On the palate, the wine is silky, textured and very fresh. A light touch of skin tannin (thanks to brief skin contact) gives structure, but the wine itself remains elegant and airy. The palate is dominated by citrus fruit (lime, grapefruit), white peach and apple, with a fine salinity and a long, clean finish. The acidity is lively, keeping the wine light and supremely drinkable.

Laurel Blanc 2024 is a dry, aromatic, exceptionally clear and modern white that uniquely combines the ripeness of Priorat with northern freshness.

Food pairing:

The wine’s pure style and fresh acidity are best suited with delicate and elegant dishes, which does not overshadow its wealth of nuance.

Recommendations:

  • Carpaccio and ceviche: turbot, whitefish, scallops, spicy lime

  • Seafood: grilled prawns, sea bass with salt and lemon, shellfish pasta

  • White meat: lemon and rosemary chicken breast, turkey with herb sauce

  • Light pastas and risottos: lemon and Parmesan risotto, linguine alle vongole

  • Salads and vegetables: orange and fennel salad, fresh goat's cheese, green herbs

  • Clean Asian flavours: sashimi, sushi, steamed fish with ginger and sesame

Serve at 9–10°C. No need to decant, but it opens up quickly in the glass.

Ageing potential:

Laurel Blanc 2024 is a wine that surprises with its capacity to develop. Thanks to the good acidity and texture of Garnatxa Blanca and Chenin Blanc, and fermentation in barrel/amphora, the wine has a very firm structure and oxidative stability. It can be enjoyed young – when its citrus freshness and floral character are at their brightest – but it also clearly has the ability to mature.

Best drinking time is 2025–2030, but the wine will also develop well for up to 6–8 years from the vintage. With age, honeyed, almondy and lightly spiced nuances deepen, the minerality becomes clearer and the texture softer. This is no short-lived white but a modern Priorat white that shows its best side at 3–7 years of age.

In 1988, when Priorat was still a forgotten Spanish wine region, Daphne Glorian took a risk that changed wine history. Born in Paris to Swiss parents, young and passionate about wine, she invested her life savings in a terraced vineyard in Gratallops. Her friends René Barbier, Álvaro Palacios and others had inspired her – and so one of the "big five" houses of Priorat was born. Daphne's project was named after the humanist Erasmus, whose work her scholar father admired. Clos Erasmus, made according to principles of minimal intervention and low yields, quickly became a cult wine, receiving several 100-point scores and securing its place among Spain's top wines. Today viticulture at Clos i Terrasses is led by biodynamics expert Ester Nin, who helps express the uniqueness of Priorat's slate terroir. Alongside Clos Erasmus a second wine was created – Laurel – which allows only the very best barrels to go into the grand vin, ensuring the uncompromising quality of Clos Erasmus. Despite international demand, Clos i Terrasses has remained a small, intimate winery – not just a wine, but a symbol of Daphne Glorian's dedication and the rebirth of Priorat.
