The wine's story:

Mépetit is the Piollot family’s tribute to the region’s historic variety — Pinot Meunier, which has always played an important role in the Côte des Bar. Unlike the traditional Champagne approach, where Meunier has played more of a “supporting role”, Piollot gives this variety centre stage, bringing out its best: juiciness, textural depth and intense aromatics.

The grapes come from planted in 1990 bushes rooted in a mix of Marne clay and Kimmeridgian limestone. The south-facing slope gives the Meunier ripeness and a sunny character, while the mineral structure of the soil adds a clear, stony core to the wine.

The name Mépét comes from the Piollot family’s own dialect — it is an intimate, family cuvée that speaks of their personal bond with the vineyard and their respect for the distinctive character of Meunier.

Winemaking:

Grape: 100% Pinot Meunier
Vine age: planted 1990
Soil: Marl (clay) + Kimmeridgian limestone
Site: south-facing slope (ripe, aromatic style)
Ageing: organic & biodynamic

Vinification:
• destemming: no
• maceration: no
• fermentation: stainless steel (steel tanks)
• ageing: in oak barrels ✔
• ageing on the lees: 4 years
• racking: yes
• fining / filtration: no
• SO₂: yes (a very low technical amount)
• dosage: Brut Nature (0 g/l)

In Mépét, the oak barrel simply lends a delicate structure and opens up the aromatic layers of Meunier — oak flavour is not the aim.

Tasting notes:

On the nose: ripe pear, yellow apple, apricot, quince, red plum, spices (white pepper, clove), a light honeyed note and a delicate smoky hint.
On the palate the wine is juicy and full, with the mellow berry fruit typical of Meunier. A creamy texture blends with lively acidity and saline limestone minerality.
Ageing in oak barrel brings hints of toasted almond, dried flowers and a light, spicy depth.
The finish is long and aromatic, with a hint of spice and the energy of ripe pear.

Mépetit is Piollot's most aromatic and immediately open cuvée — warm, approachable and gastronomic.

Food pairing:

• duck breast, turkey or chicken dishes
• smoked trout, baked salmon, creamy cod belly
• pastas with green peppercorn or herb butter
• pumpkin purée, roasted root vegetables
• soft cheeses (Brillat-Savarin, Chaource), bloomy-rind cheeses
• also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian dishes (ginger, soy, sesame)

Ageing potential:

2024–2030+
Over time, nuances of brioche, roasted nuts and dried stone fruit emerge, and the texture becomes rounder, yet Meunier’s juiciness is preserved.

Champagne Piollot is a five-generation family domaine in the village of Polisot in the Côte des Bar, run today by Roland Piollot and his daughter Jeanne. The Piollot family has grown grapes here for more than a hundred years, and their vineyards still hold rare old massal-selection vines. All 8.5 hectares of the domaine are certified organic and biodynamic. The vineyards are worked without chemicals, using their own compost, soil cultivation and natural plant preparations. The soil is Kimmeridgian limestone and clay, giving the wines clear minerality and fresh acidity. Piollot focuses on single-parcel wines and a zero-dosage style. Most wines express one grape and one plot. The range includes Côme des Tallants (Pinot Noir), Colas Robin (100% Pinot Blanc – one of the rarest cuvées in Champagne), Champs Rayés (Chardonnay), Mépetit (Pinot Meunier) and the rosé cuvée Les Protelles (a maceration rosé). Fermentations always use natural yeasts. The wines age for a long time on the lees, usually 4–6 years, which gives depth and fine texture. The result is dry, pure Champagne with a clear sense of terroir, marked by the ripe fruit, fresh acidity and salty minerality typical of the Côte des Bar. Piollot wines are valued for their honest style, balance and clear identity, and suit both professional wine lists and collectors' cellars.
