The wine's story:

Clos Erasmus is one of Priorat's legends – a wine that took the region to the world's top tier, and behind it stands one of the region's most influential names, Daphne Glorian. The 2023 wine comes from the same ultra-low-yielding terraces in Gratallops, where llicorella, or slate, gives the wine exceptional minerality, depth and power.

Grapes – predominantly Garnatxa, a small proportion with Syrah – come from three iconic plots: Escales, Aubagues and Socarrats. Everything is harvested by hand, sorted berry by berry and fermented with natural yeasts in small wooden vessels.

2023 was fermented and macerated gently to preserve the purity of the fruit and avoid over-extraction. The wine was then aged for around 17–18 months in French oak, some of it new oak barrel and some second-fill – the aim is not oak power but balance and texture.

Clos Erasmus’s production is extremely limited (thousands, not tens of thousands of bottles). Only the best lots make it into the bottle. The rest is declassified by the estate under Laurel. This is why the wine is so remarkably consistent and highly rated by critics year after year.

Winemaking:

  • ~70% Garnacha, 30% Syrah, organically and biodynamically grown.
  • The Garnacha comes from 40–85-year-old vines on terraced plots, the Syrah from slightly younger vines.
  • 24h chilling, natural-yeast fermentation in steel tanks.
  • Gentle extraction (shorter pump-overs) to avoid over-extraction.
  • Aged for 18 months in French oak (40% new) and partly in 700L amphorae to balance the oak influence.
  • Alcohol: 15%, pH 3.3 (astonishingly low, giving the wine its vibrancy).
  • Bottled in May 2024, unfiltered.

Tasting notes:

Clos Erasmus 2023 is dark, deep and concentrated, showcasing all of Priorat’s power and elegance. On the nose you immediately sense blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, complemented by violets, spices, black pepper, Mediterranean herbs and a characteristic slate minerality.

On the palate, the wine is full, powerful and yet impeccably balanced. The tannins are velvety and dense, the acidity brings freshness and the depth of fruit is impressive. On the palate you find black stone fruit, ripe black berries, dark chocolate, liquorice and mineral, stony notes.

The finish is very long, spicy, berry-fruited and mineral, lasting several tens of seconds. This is a wine that grows in the glass and becomes even more structured and multi-layered when decanted.

Clos Erasmus 2023 is, in its youth, an intense and powerful “wild animal”, yet exceptionally pure and surprisingly fresh. Classic top-flight Priorat.

Food pairing:

This is a wine that needs strong, rich flavours alongside it. Ideal with:

  • Rack of lamb, with rosemary and garlic

  • Slow-cooked beef or beef cheeks

  • Venison and game dishes, with truffle or black pepper

  • Rich stews (boeuf bourguignon, ossobuco)

  • Hard aged cheeses – Manchego, Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano

Serve at 16–18°C. When young, it is recommended decant for 1–2 hours.

Ageing potential:

Clos Erasmus 2023 is a long-lived collector's wine, whose true potential reveals itself only with time.

  • Drink from: 2026–2027

  • Drinking window: 2030–2040

  • Ageing potential: 15–20+ years

Firm structure, high concentration and slaty minerality make this a wine that evolves for decades, becoming silky-soft, more nuanced and even deeper over time.

In 1988, when Priorat was still a forgotten Spanish wine region, Daphne Glorian took a risk that changed wine history. Born in Paris to Swiss parents, young and passionate about wine, she invested her life savings in a terraced vineyard in Gratallops. Her friends René Barbier, Álvaro Palacios and others had inspired her – and so one of the "big five" houses of Priorat was born. Daphne's project was named after the humanist Erasmus, whose work her scholar father admired. Clos Erasmus, made according to principles of minimal intervention and low yields, quickly became a cult wine, receiving several 100-point scores and securing its place among Spain's top wines. Today viticulture at Clos i Terrasses is led by biodynamics expert Ester Nin, who helps express the uniqueness of Priorat's slate terroir. Alongside Clos Erasmus a second wine was created – Laurel – which allows only the very best barrels to go into the grand vin, ensuring the uncompromising quality of Clos Erasmus. Despite international demand, Clos i Terrasses has remained a small, intimate winery – not just a wine, but a symbol of Daphne Glorian's dedication and the rebirth of Priorat.
