The wine's story:

Caferlane is Girard-Bonnet’s single-plot cuvée, sourced from from the Grand Cru village of Oger in the Côte des Blancs. The aim of this wine is to show the terroir of a specific vineyard as purely as possible, without significant blending with other villages or plots.

Chardonnay from Oger often differs in style from that of the neighbouring villages. While Le Mesnil-sur-Oger gives a stricter and very chalky structure, Oger wines often have slightly more generous fruit and a broader texture, while still retaining the mineral clarity characteristic of the region.

Vintage 2020 was relatively warm and ripe in Champagne, giving the wine more fruit concentration, while the chalky soil of the Côte des Blancs keeps the acid structure clear and taut.

Winemaking:

The grapes come from from the single Oger Grand Cru plot Caferlane, where Chardonnay grows on deep chalk soil. The grapes are harvested by hand to preserve their quality and optimal ripeness.

Pressing is gentle and fermentation takes place in oak barrels, which adds texture and, through micro-oxygenation, greater depth to the wine.

After the primary fermentation, the wine matures for a long time on the lees, which gives the Champagne complexity and a finer mousse before re-corking.

Technical details

Grape: Chardonnay
Origin: Oger Grand Cru – Caferlane
Composition: 2020 vintage
Vinification: oak barrels
Dosage: 0 g/l (Brut Nature)
Alcohol: 12.5%
Recorked: 16 February 2026

Tasting notes:

On the nose come lemon peel, ripe pear and white peach, complemented by chalky minerality, white blossom and a light marine salinity. Ageing on the lees brings out nuances of brioche, roasted almond and hazelnut.

On the palate, the wine is more concentrated and deeper in texture than Girard-Bonnet’s village cuvées. Citrusy acidity keeps the wine straight and energetic, while the mid-palate develops a slightly creamy texture and riper fruit. The finish is long, mineral and slightly saline.

Food pairing:

Caferlane pairs well with dishes featuring more texture and intensity.

A good match, for example:

  • grilled or pan-seared scallops

  • sole or cod baked in butter

  • lobster or langoustine

  • more mature soft cheeses

The wine’s deeper texture and riper fruit also allow it to be paired with with richer fish dishes, where the sauce contains butter or cream.

Ageing potential:

Thanks to its structure and concentration, Caferlane is very good a Champagne with long ageing potential. The wine develops well in bottle 10–15 years, during which emerge ripe apples, toasted nuts and brioche tones, while the mineral character remains clearly perceptible.

Champagne Girard-Bonnet is a grower Champagne house in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs. The domaine is run by Paul Girard, from a family that has grown grapes in the area for several generations. The house has small vineyards in several renowned Côte des Blancs villages – Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Avize (Grand Cru) and Vertus (Premier Cru). These villages sit on chalky slopes where thin limestone soil gives Chardonnay the region's typical precise acidity, chalky minerality and straight structure. Girard-Bonnet's Champagnes are based mainly on Chardonnay. In the vineyards the focus is on small parcels, low yields and the balance between ripeness and acidity. Several plots have been in the family for decades and give small but concentrated crops. In the cellar the approach is technically precise and rather restrained. Fermentation uses natural yeasts, in stainless steel or neutral oak depending on the cuvée. Whether malolactic fermentation is used depends on the vintage and the wine – the aim is to keep the tense acidity and clarity of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. The wines age for a long time on the lees, adding texture and depth. The range is built on the expressions of villages and single vineyards – from the fresher, more approachable style of Vertus Premier Cru to the chalky precision of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the elegance of Avize and the slightly broader, riper tones of Oger. The result is Champagnes that emphasise origin, structure and minerality – a clear and detailed expression of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay.
