The wine's story:
„Aus den Dörfern” is Hammelmann’s village-level range; the letter H stands for Hochstadt, the neighbouring village to Zeiskam, where the soil is considerably richer in lime. Lime gives Riesling tension, salinity and a cooler line – Hochstadt wines are fruitier and more open in their youth than those from Zeiskam.
Lukas Hammelmann founded his small wine estate in Zeiskam, in the southern Pfalz, in 2016, coming from a family with no previous connection to winemaking. He farms just under five hectares in three villages – Zeiskam, Hochstadt and Neustadt-Hambach – and makes wine from only three varieties: Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder.
Winemaking:
- Variety: Riesling 100%
- Soil: limestone, sandstone
- Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation in wooden casks
- Around 9 months on the lees, bottled unfiltered
- Alcohol 12%
Tasting notes:
