The wine's story:

The slopes of Hambach’s Schlossberg were once entirely covered with terraces; today only a fraction of them survive. Lukas farms one such high-lying terraced parcel, home to old ungrafted vines – a rarity in Germany. The handwork here is hard and the yield small, but the result is the house’s most concentrated and precise Riesling.

Lukas Hammelmann founded his small wine estate in Zeiskam, in the southern Pfalz, in 2016, coming from a family with no previous connection to winemaking. He farms just under five hectares in three villages – Zeiskam, Hochstadt and Neustadt-Hambach – and makes wine from only three varieties: Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder.

Winemaking:

  • Variety: Riesling 100% – single-vineyard wine
  • Soil: sandstone
  • Vines: old, ungrafted
  • Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation in wooden casks
  • Around 24 months on the lees, full malolactic fermentation, bottled unfiltered
  • Alcohol 12.5%

Tasting notes:

Concentrated citrus, stone fruit, dried herbs and flint. Dry, with a precise line, great depth and a long mineral finish. Decanting recommended.

Food pairing:

For special dinners – lobster, scallops, fish with white butter sauce, veal, mature Comté.

Ageing potential:

Best 2027–2038.

Lukas Hammelmann didn't inherit a wine estate – he built one himself. His family has no connection to winegrowing, but the dream of becoming a winemaker stayed with him from childhood, and in 2016 he started with a single Riesling plot in his home village of Zeiskam in southern Pfalz. Today he farms just under five hectares in three places – Zeiskam, the neighbouring village of Hochstadt and the historic slopes of Neustadt-Hambach – and works with only three grapes: Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). All grapes are picked by hand, ferment spontaneously in wooden barrels and are mostly bottled unfiltered. The vineyards are farmed organically but without certification – "I don't do it for marketing." Around 30,000 bottles are made each year, 80% of which is exported to ten countries. In 2023 VINUM Weinguide Deutschland named him its discovery of the year.
