The wine's story:
Klostergarten is Zeiskam’s finest vineyard and Lukas’s home – the place where it all began in 2016. The single-vineyard wines spend two years on their lees in wooden casks in the Hammelmann cellar, where they clarify naturally and undergo malolactic fermentation. The result is a Riesling with depth, texture and a cool structure alongside its freshness and acidity.
Lukas Hammelmann founded his small wine estate in Zeiskam, in the southern Pfalz, in 2016, coming from a family with no previous connection to winemaking. He farms just under five hectares in three villages – Zeiskam, Hochstadt and Neustadt-Hambach – and makes wine from only three varieties: Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder.
Winemaking:
- Variety: Riesling 100% – single-vineyard wine (Lagenwein)
- Soil: sandstone, clay, loess
- Vine age: 15–20 years
- Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation in wooden casks
- 24 months on the lees, natural malolactic fermentation, bottled unfiltered
- Alcohol 12.5%
