The wine's story:
The 2021 vintage of Clos Mogador reflects the estate’s continuous development and refinement after four decades. In this vintage the Barbier family decided to adjust the blend – reducing the southern-slope Cabernet and increasing the Cariñena to emphasise freshness. The result is a wine that retains Mogador’s full-bodied Mediterranean soul while adding more elegance and vibrancy. The moderate 2021 growing season gave the wine an expressive nose and moderate alcohol (14%). This wine carries the new classification "Vinya Classificada" (individually classified vineyard), underlining its unique origins in Gratallops.
Winemaking:
- Garnacha and Cariñena dominate, with smaller proportions of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
- 30% whole bunches added to the fermentation to lift the aromatics.
- Native yeast fermentation, long 35–60-day maceration, minimal extraction.
- Ageing ~12 months: 2.000L oak foudres, 300L neutral barrels, finishing in a concrete vessel.
- Alcohol 14%, ~35 000 bottles produced, bottled in June 2023.
Tasting notes:
"Gorgeous texture… Priorat character with greater elegance and freshness." Vivid ruby red. On the nose, Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme, bay), slate minerality and red berries (cherry, raspberry). In the background, graphite, violets and herbal notes. Medium-bodied on the palate, with deep fruit concentration yet smooth. Silky tannins and balanced acidity give the wine vibrancy and refinement. Flavours of ripe plum, redcurrant and black cherry mingle with blood orange, iron and smoky minerality. A long, well-balanced finish in which the power of Mogador appears in a more refined form.
Food pairing:
An excellent match for roast lamb (a classic Priorat pairing), braised beef cheeks or oxtail, or a charcoal-grilled ribeye steak. Its herbal notes complement dishes with Mediterranean herbs – lamb with rosemary, for example, or vegetables grilled in olive oil. It also pairs well with wild fowl (duck breast, quail) and aged Manchego.
Ageing potential:
Best 2025–2035, but already enjoyable now if decanted. Can develop for over 20 years, adding spicy and leathery notes while retaining its freshness.
