The wine's story:

Nelin has been the benchmark for Priorat’s white wines, and the 2022 vintage continues Clos Mogador’s commitment to expressing the region’s finest whites. Although official details of the 2022 blend have not yet been published, previous vintages have included Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Picapoll Blanca and other local grapes. The producer’s organic viticulture and minimal intervention in the winemaking suggest that Nelin 2022 is a genuine reflection of Priorat terroir.

Winemaking:

  • Fermentation: Local varieties co-fermented with natural yeasts.
  • Ageing: A combination of oak barrels and stainless steel to add depth while preserving freshness.
  • Alcohol: probably around 14%, as in previous years.
  • Production: ~10,000 bottles, similar to previous years.

Tasting notes:

Although official tasting profiles for the 2022 are not yet public, one can expect:

  • Appearance: Pale straw yellow with a greenish tint.
  • Nose: Intense and layered – white peach, citrus, Mediterranean herbs, delicate floral and honeyed character.
  • Palate: A balance of ripeness and freshness, rich fruity depth, minerality and elegant acidity, with a long and complex finish.

Food pairing:

  • Seafood: grilled octopus, scallops, seafood paella.
  • Poultry: Herb-roasted chicken, turkey.
  • Vegetarian dishes: roasted root vegetables with Mediterranean spices, truffle pasta, mature cheeses.

Ageing potential:

Nelin is a long-lived white wine, and the 2022 can develop for at least 6–9 years. Over the years, toasty, nutty and dried floral nuances emerge, yet its vibrancy remains.

The story of Clos Mogador began in 1979, when René Barbier Sr. bought land in Gratallops – an area on the edge of oblivion whose exceptional potential he saw before anyone else. Llicorella slate, steep terraces and an extreme climate gave the wines a unique character, and Barbier was convinced that the vines here could produce world-class wines. Today the winery is run by his son René Barbier Jr. and Isabelle Meyer, who follow the same principles: organic and biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar. Their aim is to express the terroir in its purest form. Clos Mogador was the first Priorat wine to receive Vi de Finca status, confirming its uniqueness and consistent excellence. The vines grow on steep slate terraces, where the difficult conditions give a small but exceptionally concentrated crop. The wines ferment with natural yeasts and age in oak barrels, concrete tanks and amphorae to bring out the true character of Priorat.
