The character of Com Tu – Montsanti

A Montsant Garnacha-based wine that is softer, more approachable and fruitier than the wines of Priorat, reflecting the warmth of this neighbouring region.

The wine's story:

Com Tu (“Like You” in Catalan) is a special project of the Barbier family in the Montsant DO, created in 2015 by René Barbier Jr. and his brother Christian. The wine comes from a single vineyard, Miramar, located just a few hundred metres from the famous Espectacle vineyard. The young Garnacha vines give the wine a fresh, elegant character, symbolising family unity and love.

The 2021 vintage grew in a moderate climate, offering exceptional freshness and balance. Com Tu is one of the first Montsant wines to be granted Vi de Finca status, confirming its quality and uniqueness.

Winemaking:

  • 100% Garnacha (Garnatxa), vines 10–15 years old, growing on limestone and clay soils in La Figuera (Montsant).
  • Hand-harvested. Fermented in concrete tanks with native yeasts; about 50% whole bunches, but the aim was gentle extraction.
  • Short maceration (~10–15 days) to preserve elegance.
  • Aged for ~12 months in used 300L oak barrels and concrete.
  • Bottled without filtration.
  • Alcohol: 14%.
  • ~14,000 bottles produced.

Tasting notes:

Com Tu 2021 shines with a medium ruby hue. On the nose, fresh red berries (wild strawberries, ripe cherries) intertwine with floral notes (violet, rose petal). In the background, sweet spices, Mediterranean herbs (thyme, lavender) and a light minerality add depth.

Surprisingly light and silky on the palate (just 11–13% alcohol), with fine, elegant tannins. Red berries, liquorice, cocoa and wild herbs unfold delicately. Montsant’s limestone soil adds structure and length. The finish is soft and fruity, with cherry, sandalwood and a fresh acidity that invites the next sip. A refined, soulful Garnacha that proves depth does not require power.

Food pairing:

Serve Com Tu lightly chilled with tapas, such as botifarra sausage or escalivada (roasted vegetables).

Excellent with grilled pork tenderloin, duck breast with berry sauce, or fish with Mediterranean flavours, such as tuna or swordfish with tomato compote.

The wine’s herbal notes complement dishes with rosemary or sage, such as chicken roasted with herbes de Provence. Also pairs well with soft goat’s cheeses and cured sausages.

Ageing potential:

Com Tu is made to be enjoyed young, to bring out its fresh, juicy berry fruit, but its structure allows 5–7 years of development. Until 2026 spicier and earthier notes (dried herbs, forest floor) will emerge, while the red-berry character is retained. Well stored, the 2021 vintage will taste superb until at least 2028.

The story of Clos Mogador began in 1979, when René Barbier Sr. bought land in Gratallops – an area on the edge of oblivion whose exceptional potential he saw before anyone else. Llicorella slate, steep terraces and an extreme climate gave the wines a unique character, and Barbier was convinced that the vines here could produce world-class wines. Today the winery is run by his son René Barbier Jr. and Isabelle Meyer, who follow the same principles: organic and biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar. Their aim is to express the terroir in its purest form. Clos Mogador was the first Priorat wine to receive Vi de Finca status, confirming its uniqueness and consistent excellence. The vines grow on steep slate terraces, where the difficult conditions give a small but exceptionally concentrated crop. The wines ferment with natural yeasts and age in oak barrels, concrete tanks and amphorae to bring out the true character of Priorat.
