The wine's story:

Les Mussettes is Girard-Bonnet’s single-plot cuvée from the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the best-known Chardonnay areas in Champagne. This village is legendary for wines whose style is defined by high acidity, very chalky minerality and exceptional ageing potential.

The grapes come from from old vines, which give lower yields but greater concentration and depth. Les Mussettes is therefore noticeably more austere and mineral than Girard-Bonnet’s Oger or Avize wines.

Vintage 2020 gave a riper fruit profile, but Le Mesnil's chalky soil still preserves a very clear and taut structure in the wine.

Winemaking:

The grapes come from from the Les Mussettes vineyard in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru, where Chardonnay grows on deep chalk soils. The grapes are hand-picked to preserve their quality and freshness.

Pressing is gentle and fermentation takes place in oak barrels, which adds texture and, through micro-oxygenation, depth to the wine.

After the primary fermentation, the wine matures for a long time on the lees, which gives the Champagne complexity and a finer mousse before re-corking.

Tasting notes:

On the nose come lemon peel, grapefruit and green apple, complemented by chalky minerality, white blossom and a light marine salinity. Ageing on the lees brings out nuances of brioche, roasted almond and hazelnut.

On the palate, the wine is very straight and taut. The citrusy acidity gives the wine’s structure a clear line, while the concentration of the old vines adds depth to the mid-palate. The finish is long, dry and very mineral, dominated by tones of chalk and lemon zest.

Food pairing:

Les Mussettes is particularly good with dishes where what matters is purity and mineral balance.

A good match, for example:

  • oysters and clams

  • scallop or sea urchin

  • grilled sole or cod

  • sashimi and raw seafood

The wine’s taut acidity and mineral structure also work very well with salty, iodine-rich seafood, where the wine highlights the natural sweetness of the dish.

Ageing potential:

Thanks to the structure of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Les Mussettes is a very good a Champagne with long ageing potential. The wine develops well in bottle 12–15 years, during which emerge ripe citrus, roasted nuts and nuances of brioche, while the chalky minerality remains clearly perceptible.

Champagne Girard-Bonnet is a grower Champagne house in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs. The domaine is run by Paul Girard, from a family that has grown grapes in the area for several generations. The house has small vineyards in several renowned Côte des Blancs villages – Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Avize (Grand Cru) and Vertus (Premier Cru). These villages sit on chalky slopes where thin limestone soil gives Chardonnay the region's typical precise acidity, chalky minerality and straight structure. Girard-Bonnet's Champagnes are based mainly on Chardonnay. In the vineyards the focus is on small parcels, low yields and the balance between ripeness and acidity. Several plots have been in the family for decades and give small but concentrated crops. In the cellar the approach is technically precise and rather restrained. Fermentation uses natural yeasts, in stainless steel or neutral oak depending on the cuvée. Whether malolactic fermentation is used depends on the vintage and the wine – the aim is to keep the tense acidity and clarity of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. The wines age for a long time on the lees, adding texture and depth. The range is built on the expressions of villages and single vineyards – from the fresher, more approachable style of Vertus Premier Cru to the chalky precision of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the elegance of Avize and the slightly broader, riper tones of Oger. The result is Champagnes that emphasise origin, structure and minerality – a clear and detailed expression of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay.
