The wine's story:

Les Poyeux is a legendary name in Saumur, associated above all with Cabernet Franc, but Fabien Duveau also makes a white Chenin Blanc from this site. That is what makes the wine special: Poyeux is today almost entirely devoted to the red variety, but Duveau’s Chenin reveals another facet of the site’s limestone, sand and clay.

Duveau's presentation emphasises that Poyeux gives the Chenin roundness, complexity and minerality. This is a wine in which Chenin Blanc is not merely a fresh white, but a serious, layered and gastronomic wine.

Winemaking:

  • Grape: 100% Chenin Blanc
  • Appellation: AOC Saumur Blanc
  • Village: Chacé
  • Site: Les Poyeux
  • Soil: sand and tuffeau; the producer’s website also describes it as sand turning to clay at depth, with sandstone stones
  • Vines: for Poyeux, the producer's website refers to planting in 1976
  • Fermentation: native yeasts
  • Ageing: 12 months on the lees in oak barrels of various ages
  • Serving: around 12 °C

Tasting notes:

On the nose, white blossom, citrus, apple and pear. On the palate the wine is dry with a fresh attack, but with a deeper texture and longer finish than Hunaudière. Ageing on the lees and in barrel adds discreet toastiness, a buttery feel and a hint of bread crust, but minerality and Chenin’s acidity remain the wine’s backbone.

Food pairing:

  • Scallops or prawns with a buttery sauce
  • Oven-baked zander, cod or sea bass
  • Poultry with a cream sauce or mushrooms
  • Roasted cauliflower, celeriac or pumpkin
  • Semi-hard and mature goat's cheeses

Ageing potential:

5–10 years, probably longer in good cellar conditions. Poyeux is one of the Loire white wines with the most serious ageing potential.

Fabien Duveau is an eighth-generation winemaker in Saumur-Champigny who took over the domaine from his father in 2008. His work is based on the two main grapes of Saumur: Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Duveau's wines are tied to specific lieux-dits – precise sites around Chacé, Varrains, Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg and Brézé. Fabien has converted the domaine to organic farming, and it has held Demeter biodynamic certification since late 2023. His work centres on living soils, natural yeasts, tuffeau, clay-limestone, sand and flint-chalk, and a wish to let each site speak its own language. In style, Fabien Duveau's wines are energetic, precise and made for food. The white Chenins are not just fresh but carry texture, depth and mineral tension. The Cabernet Francs are fresh, juicy and peppery, leaning towards transparency rather than weight.
