The wine's story:
Clos Mogador’s 2022 vintage builds on the success of the producer’s outstanding vintages. A warm, dry growing season produced a smaller but exceptionally concentrated crop, which was picked early to preserve acidity and balance. René Barbier Jr. describes 2022 as “achieving the character of Mogador and the Mediterranean… with greater elegance and freshness”, continuing a direction that combines Priorat’s natural power with greater drinkability. Although the wine is still young, it has already been called an exceptional and opulent vintage that may rival highly rated earlier years.
Winemaking:
- The blend and winemaking are similar to 2021: Garnacha, Cariñena, Syrah and a small proportion of Cabernet.
- Natural fermentation, with some whole bunches to lift the aromatics.
- Maceration for 4–5 weeks, gentle extraction.
- Aged in large foudres (partly in smaller barrels), and finally in a concrete tank before bottling (mid-2024).
- Alcohol 14.5%. Expected production ~34,000 bottles.
Tasting notes:
Deep ruby-red hue. On the nose, a captivating combination of ripe blackberries and blueberries, liquorice and dark chocolate, with balsamic notes (eucalyptus, menthol) and a light toasty touch in the background. The wine first opens with balsamic notes, followed by exceptional fruit intensity – crème de cassis, black plum jam – and crushed-slate minerality. On the palate powerful and mouth-filling, with deep layers of black fruit, mocha and Mediterranean spices. Despite its fullness, a graphite-like freshness and herbal brightness give the wine balance. The tannins are plentiful but already silky, and the finish is slightly gripping, promising long ageing potential. The finish is powerful, warm and exceptionally long – a young giant that will become even more complex within a couple of years. (Early tasters recommend a longer decant when drinking it young, so the wine opens fully.)
Food pairing:
The powerful 2022 Priorat needs equally robust food. Braised venison or wild boar, a pepper-crusted steak or slow-cooked leg of lamb can hold their own against this wine. Its fruity character and spiciness also suit barbecue ribs in a rich sauce or a herb-braised ratatouille. Hard cheeses and charcuterie are classic companions. In general, the wine goes with any rich and flavourful dish.
Ageing potential:
Although velvety even in its youth, this is a collector’s wine suited to longer ageing. Best 2025–2040. Its firm tannins and concentration promise 15–20 years of development, softening over time and revealing nuances of dried fig, leather and truffle. Patience pays off, but its balance ensures the wine is also enjoyable earlier with lengthy decanting.
