Manzanilla Fina Miraflores Baja is a classic manzanilla, salty with the sea and quintessentially Sanlúcar, where flor and the influence of the ocean are clearly to the fore.

The wine's story:

This wine shows very clearly why manzanilla is not simply another name for fino. Miraflores Baja’s proximity to the sea gives it a special lightness, salinity and sharp focus that are hard to replicate inland. In De La Riva’s hands it is a classic style, but with a very pure, terroir-conscious interpretation in which youthfulness, salinity and sapidity matter. It is a wine that combines the traditional idea of manzanilla with a very clear sense of place.

Winemaking:

100% Palomino. The wine comes from the Miraflores Baja area near the sea and matures under flor in a solera system. The barrels are not filled to the brim so that the flor can stay active and give the wine its classic manzanilla character: dryness, nuttiness, umami and maritime finesse. This is a non-vintage wine whose value lies in the precise balance between maturity and freshness.

Tasting notes:

On the nose, white flowers, green apple, pear, almond, sea salt and a light yeasty note. On the palate very dry and bright with a sharp saline focus, light-bodied yet intense. The finish lingers with white almond, chalk and a very pure marine sapidity.

Food pairing:

Pairs with olives, jamón, prawns, oysters, anchovies, fried fish and all kinds of tapas. An ideal aperitif wine, yet substantial enough for the table.

Ageing potential:

Best drunk within 1–4 years to preserve its liveliness, maritime tension and youthful manzanilla character.

Ratings & accolades:

Ratings for different bottlings: Tim Atkin 96/100 (saca 2025); Wine Advocate 94/100 and Falstaff 94/100 (earlier saca).

Bodegas De La Riva is a joint project of Willy Pérez and Ramiro Ibáñez, aimed at restoring the meaning of Jerez's older wines, historic vineyard sites and small-batch wines. While Luis Pérez and Ramiro each make terroir-driven wines under their own names, De La Riva lets their two approaches meet even more freely: old soleras, single casks, historical references and very carefully chosen pagos. The wines are made in small quantities, often outside the usual mass-produced sherry logic, and emphasise place, ageing and the old flavour ideals of Jerez. De La Riva wines are mostly serious, layered and highly individual.
