The wine's story:

Magma is Domaine de la Croisée's core wine, the idea of which is not to isolate a single small parcel but to bring together the domaine's main terroirs. The wine is born in the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, in the central Loire, where Sauvignon Blanc is associated above all with limestone, flint and Kimmeridgian soils.

The producer describes Magma as a fusion of three main sites: Kimmeridgian marl, clay-limestone and flinty sands. This gives the wine citrus purity, mineral tension and a slightly smoky, stony character all at once – just what is often sought in Pouilly-Fumé.

Winemaking:

  • Grape: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
  • Appellation: AOC Pouilly-Fumé
  • Soil: Kimmeridgian marl, clay-limestone, flinty sands
  • Fermentation: with wild yeasts, based on the producer’s general philosophy

Tasting notes:

The style is dry, taut and mineral, with the Sauvignon Blanc heading not towards tropical fruit but rather towards lime, green apple, lemon peel, white flowers, wet stone and a light smoky-mineral nuance. The name Magma suits the wine well: it does not mean heaviness, but a stony, tensile, energy-carrying expression.

Food pairing:

  • Oysters and seafood
  • Grilled white fish with lemon and herbs
  • Goat's cheese
  • Asparagus, herb risotto or a spring vegetable dish
  • Lightly smoked trout or whitefish

Ageing potential:

Recommended 3–6 years from the vintage.

Domaine de la Croisée is a small Pouilly-Fumé producer run by Nolwenn and Matthieu Maudry. The domaine began when they took over an 8.5-hectare vineyard in the heart of Pouilly-Fumé at the end of 2019. Their work centres on Sauvignon Blanc – not in the sense of a simple aromatic wine, but as a precise expression of Pouilly-Fumé's different soils, especially Kimmeridgian marl, clay-limestone and flinty sand. The domaine started converting to organic certification right after arriving. They work the soil mainly mechanically and shallowly, aiming to aerate it rather than turn it over. Fermentations use natural yeasts. This makes Domaine de la Croisée a good example of the new Loire generation: small volumes, clear origin, less intervention and a wish to show Pouilly-Fumé as a living rather than a technical wine.
